Scotland’s jurisdiction
Compass House, 11 Riverside Drive, Dundee, DD1 4NY is the headquarters. The Scottish Social Services Council is in charge of enhancing social service standards in Scotland. The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) was founded in October 2001 by the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act and is in charge of registering and regulating people who work in the social services.
Registration
On April 1, 2003, the Register of Social Service Workers opened, with social workers being the first to register. There are now 60,000 workers on the register in 2014.
The following social service personnel are already registered with the SSSC or will be required to do so in the future: employees in the field of social work, students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work or a master’s degree in social work Commission on Health and Social Services, everyone who works in a residential child care facility (this includes managers, supervisors and workers), managers of adult residential care facilities, adult day care service managers.
The Codes of Practice for Social Service Employees are a set of declarations that explain the professional conduct and practice that social service workers must follow in their day-to-day work. On November 1, 2016, the new Codes of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers went into effect. The Codes lay forth the expectations of social service employees and their employers in terms of practice and behavior.
The amended codes reflect the SSSC’s transition from a misconduct to a fitness to practice form of regulation, as well as the addition of a duty of candour.
